CITATION

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is awarded the LUI Che Woo Prize for Sustainability for its long-standing and well-recognised successful efforts to “conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends”.

Using a holistic and science-based approach, TNC protects, restores and maintains whole ecosystems, including their bio-diversity, through conservation, re-forestation and tree-planting, the promotion of new national parks, and the use of land preservation techniques such as conservation easements and debt for nature swaps.

It has persuaded individuals and organisations to put aside in perpetuity land that is ecologically important as well as encouraged governments to support these efforts.  TNC has a major global presence.  It is a model of effective climate remedial action from the ground up.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a global conservation organization working to create a world where people and nature can thrive with the mission to conserve the land and waters on which all life depends.

TNC’s vision is a world where the diversity of life thrives, and people act to conserve nature for its own sake and its ability to fulfill our needs and enrich our lives.

TNC is tackling climate change, conserving lands, waters and oceans at unprecedented scale, providing food and water sustainably and helping make cities more sustainable. Working in 72 countries across six continents, TNC uses a collaborative approach that engages local communities, governments, the private sector, and other partners. TNC has over 400 scientists to set both long-term and near-term goals to drive transformational change on a global scale. Its model is strengthened by local and global partnerships with a focus on evidence-based, pragmatic solutions to influence global decision-makers.

Founded at its grassroots in the United States in 1951, TNC has grown to become one of the most effective and wide-reaching environmental organizations in the world. Guided by science, TNC creates innovative, on-the-ground solutions to the world’s toughest challenges. With over 65 years of conservation experience, TNC have established over 100 marine conservation sites, protected more than 50 million hectares of land and 8,000 kilometers of rivers, and reduced 2 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually through its conservation projects.

TNC has been in Asia Pacific for over 28 years, starting with our first project in Micronesia and now also covering conservation programs in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.
