2018 Sustainability Prize Laureate

26 October, 2018

Mr Hans-Josef Fell is an internationally recognised founding figure of the global renewable energy movement. In the 1970s, he pioneered activism and advocacy for an ecological movement in Germany. In 1994, he founded the world’s first energy community for solar power generation, which inspired many technological innovations and transformed the market for renewable energy. Mr Fell drafted and successfully fought for the adoption by the German Parliament of the Renewable Energy Sources Act, a feed-in-tariff law that was instrumental for the deployment, mass production, and falling prices of solar, wind, biogas, hydro and geothermal power on an industrial scale.

This law has been replicated over one hundred times all around the world. He was one of the driving forces behind the Directive for Renewable Energies of the European Union.

Mr Fell’s dedicated work over the course of half a century successfully changed global debates and practices on the subject of renewable energy. Mr Fell has been President of the Energy Watch Group since 2014, and is also an influential ambassador of Global 100% Renewable Energy.
