Sustainability Prize
Specific Area of Focus: Development of Renewable Energy

Resources on Earth are scarce, but renewable energy is vast and inexhaustible. Renewable energy provides invaluable benefits to our climate, health, and economy. Firstly, they can replace carbon-intensive energy sources and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Secondly, renewable energy helps to improve the quality of public health and the environment, decrease premature mortality, increase worker productivity, and significantly reduce overall healthcare costs. Thirdly, growth in the renewable energy industry can create jobs and bring about other economic benefits. Renewable energy can deliver affordable and reliable electricity. Developing renewable energy can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and at the same time, ensure the stability of energy prices and supply, which could diversify available energy sources and achieve sustainable development.

Welfare Betterment Prize
Specific Area of Focus: Reduction of the Impacts of Natural Disasters

Predicting natural disasters is difficult. What we can do is proactively prevent them and mitigate the impact as much as we can. Since the 1980s, human loss from natural disasters has been an increasingly prominent phenomenon. According to a report published by the World Economic Forum, damage and loss to infrastructure and the environment caused by extreme weather and geophysical disasters such as earthquakes is one of the top 5 global risks of 2017. Natural disasters cause catastrophic destruction, bring insecurity and danger, and escalate the issue of poverty in the affected region, all of which threaten the welfare of mankind. The concept and practice of disaster risk reduction involves understanding disaster risk and reducing the underlying risk factors, strengthening disaster risk governance, investing in disaster risk reduction, enhancing disaster preparedness for efficient and effective response, and establishing a mechanism for recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction. Achievement in disaster risk reduction could strengthen disaster preparedness to enable a prompt and effective response and recovery at all levels, thus saving lives and minimising economic loss.

Education is the tool to achieve all the developmental goals for a better global community, including women’s empowerment, reduction of child mortality and hunger, poverty alleviation and enhancement of economic growth. It allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, the right attitude and values necessary to shape a better future for mankind.
